£9m Great Ancoats Street Manchester European Boulevard Complete

Great Ancoats Street has become an important section of Manchester’s inner ring-road, connecting the Northern Quarter with the neighbourhoods of Ancoats, New Islington and Piccadilly.

The aim of the regeneration of Great Ancoats Street was to create a European style boulevard, improving the look, feel and safety of the route, by planting seventy trees, new pedestrian crossings and road resurfacing, aimed at reducing traffic noise by 40%.

The Great Ancoats Street scheme has improved connectivity between the surrounding neighbourhoods and Manchester city centre, providing more than twenty new crossing points. The scheme will support the continuing success and growth of the area as a place to live, work and visit and significantly improve safety for people travelling across a busy road, on foot or by bicycle.

The local street environment has been drastically improved with the planting of sixty three trees along the route, including Tulip Tree, Green Pillar and Regal Prince, with an additional eight Japanese white-flowering “Mount Fuji” Cherry trees also due to be planted at the junction of Great Ancoats Street with Helmet Street.

Great Ancoats Street is part of wider regeneration plan to improve infrastructure across Manchester city centre. The Northern and Eastern Gateway Scheme will also enhance the area with a new cycling route through Ancoats and New Islington, further improving connectivity. A public consultation is underway, although expenditure of £1.7 million has already been approved for the project.
